A Word from Our Patients

I have suffered from significant low back pain on and off for 10 years.  At times, it has even been painful to sit, walk and stand.  One of my co-workers referred me to see Dr. Finn after having another flare up.  When I came in to see Dr. Finn, I couldn't even stand up straight.

After completing my treatment plan, I am now pain free and participating in my normal activities, including running 3 to 4 miles at a time.

Auto Accident Checklist  car_accident.jpg

Did you know that auto accidents will rise significantly this time of year?  Fewer daylight hours and increased deer movement means greater chance of a collision occurring - the number of incidents nearly doubles!  We thought that makes it a good time to share this checklist with you:

  • Even a minor accident can cause injury.  Never assume that you are not injured just because there is little or no damage to your car.  Seek professional care immediately.
  • If a paramedic suggests you go to the emergency room, do not decline.  You may be suffering from shock, and will be unable to properly judge the situation.  Even the smallest fracture in your spine can be very serious!
  • Muscle aches, soreness, headaches and other symptoms associated with whiplash injuries may not show up until 24-72 hours after the accident.  The sooner you seek treatment, the less likely it will be that you'll have severe pain or permanent damage.
  • Studies show that immediately applying ice to the injured area will help keep swelling and pain to a minimum.
  • If the accident involves another vehicle, make sure you exchange information at the scene.  Obtain an accident report from the police as soon as possible.
  • Report the accident to your auto carrier immediately.  This will enable them to initiate a claim and get your repairs and medical  bills paid in a timely manner.  Report the accident even if it was not your fault and you plan to use the responsible person's insurance.  Your carrier CANNOT increase your premiums if the accident wasn't your fault.  And the other party may not have adequate insurance to meet your needs.
  • Do not let insurance companies bully you!  You may be "encouraged" by an insurance adjuster to settle your claim as quickly as possible.  Do NOT settle any claim until your medical needs have been met and all repairs have been made.  If you have problems with an insurance company, or feel your case is not being handled properly, seek the advice of a reputable personal injury attorney.  Normally, you will not have any out-of-pocket expenses and most attorneys will wait until the claim is settled for payment.

If you would like any additional information about auto accidents, work-related injuries or other health-related problems, please call us.  We'll be happy to assist you in any way possible.

Condition of the Month:  Migraine Headaches   headache.jpg

Common migraine is a disorder involving recurrent headaches, and affects about 6 out of 100 people.  They are a common type of chronic headache.  They most commonly occur in women and usually begin between the ages of 10 and 46.  In some cases, they appear to run in families.  Migraines occur when blood vessels of the head and neck spasm or constsrict, which decreases blood flow to the brain.  Minutes to hours later, the blood vessels enlarge, resulting in a severe headache.  Inflammation around the blood vessels also occurs in some cases.

Common migraine may be accompanied by symptoms other than headache, but only rarely includes preliminary warning symptoms.  Migraines may also appear as classic migraine (a migraine preceded by other symptoms) and other rare forms.  Multiple mechanisms trigger the spasm and subsequent blood vessel dilation.

Symptoms include:

  • Throbbing, pulsating pain
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Neck Pain

Pain commonly lasts 6-48 hours and may sometimes be
   - worse on the sides of the forehead
   - on only 1 side of the forehead
   - severe or dull

If you're plagued by migraines, chiropractic care works to correct the underlying causes of headaches.  Give us a call to discuss how we can relieve the symptoms associated with migraines.

8 Helpful Tips to a Healthier Thanksgiving
by Kathy Smith

Yes, Thanksgiving's all about that great and delicious meal that Thanksgiving_dinner.gifyou'll be eating.  All those yummy desserts and of course that roasted turkey centerpiece with all the trimmings.  Who could resist those?

Well, even if you're going to be eating all those treats, it doesn't mean that you'll ruin your goal of a lifestyle that is more fit and healthy.  Here are some good tips to help you be healthy, even during Thanksgiving.

1.  Use less bread and more vegetables in your stuffing.  Substitute a portion of your bread for onions, fruits (dried apples & cranberries), or celery.  This 1 step alone will lessen calories that you put into your stuffing.

2.  Add in more pumpkin.  Pumpkins are one of the healthy components of a Thanksgiving celebration.  Canned ones are higher in vitamin content than the fresh ones.  Add pumpkin to your mashed up potatoes, breads, soups and even in your pie.

3.  Make sure you don't forget your vegetables.  Take note of all those vegetables in season and try to incorporate them into the Thanksgiving dishes.  You could play around with beans, squash, yams and sweet potatoes and play up your dishes with these vegetables.

4.  Never rush.  Don't eat fast as if there was no tomorrow.  Be sure to savor the food you are eating so that you will experience the feeling of fullness.  If you eat fast, you might tend to ignore those feelings of fullness and eat more.  There's always tomorrow to enjoy those leftovers!

5.  Indulge fun and sporty activities.  It would be best to be active during this season.  You could take a nice long walk, play touch football with friends and family, or just ride your bike around the neighborhood.

6.  Eat pies moderately.  Thanksgiving celebrations will always have delicious pies, just don't eat too much.  It would be healthier if you eat those pecan and pumpkin pies because they are lesser in calories.

7.  Lower fat content in your homemade gravy.  If you have a gadget that separates fat, use it.  Or you could refrigerate those juices from your turkey so you can take out the fatty layer before you make them into gravy.

8.  Have lots of FUN!  Thanksgiving only happens once a year.  Be sure to have lots of fun with your family and your family traditions, then enjoy the Thanksgiving dinner meal.
